My fundraising goal for Drift West is $2,250. Our ME2SB trip last summer raised more than $160,000, and I can't wait to see what the Drift West team can accomplish! Some of this money is used to offset the cost of the trip and administrative costs, but the majority of it is contributed to the affordable housing cause in one of 4 ways:
  1. Competitive Grants:  Bike & Build will distribute part of the fundraising proceeds to housing groups across the country through competitive grants. Riders receive and review grant applications and award funding through a team-based selection process.  As a group, the riders are allowed to choose where to donate their collective donations.
  2. Rider-Designated Beneficiaries: Each rider can donate $500 of their fundraising specifically to an affordable housing organization of their choice.  This could be a group that the rider has met on the road, an organization in their hometown, etc.
  3. On-the-road Donations:  Bike & Build groups are hosted each night by community organizations, schools, religious groups, and generous people across the country. As a thank-you, each host is invited to name an affordable housing organization to which Bike & Build will donate $100.
  4. Pre-Arranged Contributions:  Bike & Build will make pre-determined contributions to fun projects executed by the groups they work with to produce Bike & Build events, such as week-long blitz builds. In 2014 Bike & Build will contribute $55k to Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity.
According to their 2012 Annual Report, Bike & Build contributed $610,263 to 350 affordable housing organizations across 48 states. They report that 85% of Bike & Build's expenses go to grants, donations, or supporting the riders. That means the majority of your donation directly supports affordable housing in America, and the rest makes it possible.

Please consider donating what you can. Whether it's $1 or $100, every little bit makes a difference in reaching the goal of $2,250.  Your donation not only helps provide affordable housing for families in need, but also makes you a part of this journey. Want a post card or letter from somewhere along the route? A personal shout-out on the blog? A small-town souvenir? I want to make each one of my donors a part of my trip in any way that I can by keeping you informed on my blog and having you in my thoughts throughout the trip.

How to Donate:

There are two ways to donate to help me reach my fundraising goal of $2,250 (while subsequently becoming my favorite person in the world):

  1. Online (preferred) - To make a donation online, click here to visit Bike & Build's donation page. You can also visit my rider bio page on Bike & Build's website and click the Donate button. Online donations are done through PayPal.
  2. Mail - To make a donation by mail, please send a check payable to Bike & Build with my name in the memo section and mail it to:
                                                                            Bike & Build
                                                                         6153 Ridge Ave.
                                                                    Philadelphia, PA 19128

From Bike & Build: We are, legally, only able to send acknowledgements to the original writers of the check. For checks that are signed over to Bike & Build, Inc., we will only be able to send acknowledgements to the person who signs over the check not the original donor. Donations of $75 or less will receive an emailed acknowledgement only.

  2. Thanks JO! I'm working on finding a gadget/widget that will show how far along my fundraising is and will add it to the blog soon. Great idea!
